From the mid of 1980s on, Authentic Chanel handbags come with authenticity cards embossed with a serial number (as seen on right) - The serial number on the authenticity card matches the one appearing on a sticker placed somewhere within the handbag's interior lining. Chanel logos can be found on the serial number stic. Locate the serial number. There must be a serial number placed somewhere within the bag's interior. Prior to the late 1990s, the serial number was printed on a white sticker with the Chanel logo printed in gold across the background. From the late 1990s to the present, the serial number has been printed on a white sticker beneath 2 gold Chanel logos.

Bagista takes authenticating handbags very seriously. Our promise is to provide the best pre-loved handbags, but the first and most important check is that the item is 100% authentic. Unfortunately, there are some very good fakes available and sometimes it can be very hard to distinguish the difference. For highly sought after items, such as Chanel and Louis Vuitton, the manufacturers of some of these fake bags have become so skilled at creating these counterfeit items that they are known as ‘super fakes’.
At Bagista every bag goes through a two point verification system. The first being our authentication system, Entrupy, which guarantees the verification of top brands such as Chanel, Prada, Hermés and Balenciaga, to name a few. Once the system has provided an authenticity certificate, our authentication experts then check the bag in detail, to ensure there is no mistake in its authenticity. Any bags which do not pass the computer verification are not considered for sale. When you shop on Bagista, you can be sure that every item has been through rigorous checks to put your mind at ease, and can focus on what your next bag purchase will be!
With such a huge and loyal following, one of the most obvious handbags to copy are Chanel’s classic flap bags. The bag is one of the most iconic luxury handbags ever created and as such it comes with an expensive price tag. The first thing to note is that if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Be careful and only buy from reputable websites.
Authenticity card
Ever since the 1980’s, Chanel have included an authenticity card along with their products, but many fakes now come with a fake card included. One easy way to spot if the card is a fake, is to shine a light on it. If the card is authentic, the foil will remain gold when under a strong light. A fake card will have a rainbow effect in the foil.
Also the consistency of the card is a giveaway. The authentic Chanel card will have the consistency of a credit card. Fake cards might feel thinner and cheaper in quality.
Serial number
If the card is genuine, check that the serial number matches the code on the interior woven label of the bag. There are many different versions of this serial number, but if your bag is post 2000 – it should have strikethroughs on the 0’s, it should be an eight-digit number that is printed on to a white label with two Chanel logos. The white label should be covered in clear tape, which has glitter inside it. It will then have an ‘X’ cut line in the tape to prevent it from being removed without damage. There should also be a dark line on the left of the sticker and CHANEL on the right. For earlier versions, there are many places you can check what the serial number should look like online. Make sure to check that the serial number on your bag is in the exact format it should be before purchasing.
Also note that Chanel do not currently make any bags with nine digit or more serial numbers.
Stitching
Authentic Chanel bags are hand stitched and each side of the quilted diamond should have 11 stitches.
The quilting will always be even and match up exactly. Check the back of the back, if the slip pocket is not aligned exactly with the quilting on the bag, it is not genuine.
The CC Lock
The signature CC lock on a Chanel classic flap is often the first sign of a fake handbag. The first thing to check is that the right C must always overlap on the top and the left C must always overlap on the bottom. If your bag is overlapping differently, it is not a genuine bag.

Another quick check is the the CC lock should be centered to the leather panel, if it is sitting too high or too low on this piece of leather, stay clear.
The back of the hardware (under the flap) should have two screws. One side should say CHANEL and the other, PARIS.
Structure and Materials
Classic Chanel bags always stand up straight on their own, they sit flatly against a surface and do not look crooked or uneven.
Chanel only use the best leathers and hardware on their products, so if you suspect that the leather used is not the highest quality, it will not be genuine. The most popular leathers used by the fashion house are lambskin, which is very soft to the touch and has a smooth appearance, and caviar leather, which is pebbled and durable. The caviar leather will feel raised and no two panels will look exactly the same due to the nature of the leather, so this is another point of authentication to check.
Made In
Chanel bags will always say 'Made in France' or 'Made in Italy' any others, including 'Made in Paris' are not genuine.
Hopefully this will help you to distinguish an authentic Chanel bag from the fakes available. However, if after checking these things you are still not sure whether or not your bag is genuine, take it to be authenticated as some experts can check over further details. Don't risk it and always be 100% sure.
